El presente estudio es el resultado de consultas a testimonios musicales procedentes de las antiguas reducciones jesuíticas de los indios chiquitos y moxos. Entre miles de facsímiles musicales que documentan la gran cultura musical que surgió en las misiones de los indios, hay una obra única, titulada S. Ygnacio de autoría de varios compositores (todos anónimos) que habitaron en los pueblos jesuíticos o cuya música llegó hasta allí. Su estructura formal es la de una ópera barroca que consta de obertura, recitativos, arias y ariosos. No obstante, ningún testimonio escrito designa a esta composición como ópera. 
En los siglos pasados, sobre todo XVII y XVIII, los jesuitas se sirvieron de la ópera en sus colegios en Europa para fines pedagógicos con la juventud. En otras ocasiones, la presentaron también para solemnizar grandes fiestas de la compañía, como la santificación de su fundador, Ignacio de Loyola, y la del más renombrado misionero del Oriente, Francisco de Xavier. También en sus colegios y misiones en América utilizaron la ópera con finalidad educativa para la juventud. 

This study is the result of research of musical testimony from the old Chiquitos and Moxos Jesuit missions. Among the thousands of musical facsimiles that the indigenous people in the missions produced, there is a unique work titled S. Ygnacio, authored by several composers, all of them anonymous, who inhabited the Jesuit towns or somehow managed to get their music there. Its formal structure is that of a Baroque opera, with an overture, recitatives, arias and ariosos. Nevertheless, there are no written records that designate this composition as an opera. 
In past centuries, particularly the XVII and XVIII, the Jesuits used the opera in their schools in Europe to educate the youth. In other occasions, they presented it to add solemnity to large celebrations of the Society of Jesus, such as the sanctification of its founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola and of its best-known missionary to the East, Francis Xavier. The opera was also used in their schools and missions in America with didactic purposes.
