Abstract:

The article aims to show, using the example of the rarely studied Latin autobiography of Michael Denis, the influence of this important Latin author and Jesuit in 18th century Austria. (Commentariorum De vita sua libri V, in: J.F. von Retzer, Michael's Denis Literarischer Nachlass, Erste Abteilung, Vienna 1801) The author states that the intellectual profile of the author is characterised by his engagement with the classics and his position with regard to the use of German and Latin. In the analysis of this autobiography it will be shown in how far German and Austrian reception of the classics differ from each other in the age of the Enlighenment.
