El pasado año 2004 se cumplían, muy probablemente, los 500 años del nacimiento de Claudio Jayo (1504-1552), uno de los primeros compañeros de Ignacio de Loyola en París, del grupo de los diez Primi Patres que formarían más tarde la Compañía de Jesús. La figura de este gran jesuita saboyano ha permanecido desproporcionadamente ensombrecida ante el "resplandor" de otros miembros del grupo que, ya sea por los cargos que desempeñaron en la Orden, como Ignacio de Loyola o Diego Laínez, ya sea por su enorme actividad misionera desplegada, como Francisco Javier, o por su santidad de vida, brillaron con mayor proyección para la posteridad. Siguiendo hasta donde nos ha sido posible las fuentes de las que disponemos, este artículo pretende rescatar de un cierto olvido a Claudio Jayo e ir presentando al hilo de su cronología las facetas humana, religioso - jesuítica y teológico - espiritual de un jesuita ante todo fiel compañero, lúcido teólogo de obispos y del Concilio y apóstol infatigable en la agitada Europa de mediados del siglo XVI.
Born very probably in 1504, last year marked the V Centenary of the birth of Claude Jay, one of the first Companions of Ignatius of Loyola in Paris, member of the first group of ten students at Sorbona UNiversity, later known as Primi Patres or the Maestros de París, who would become later the future "Society of Jesus". The figure of this great saboian Jesuit has remained unfairly hidden, maybe overshadowed by the brightness of some other contemporary group members who, because of their responsibilities inside the Order (Ignatius or D. Laínez), becuase of their huge missionary activities (Francis Xavier) or because of their holy lives, shined with a bigger influence all along posterity. Trying to follow as much as possible the sources at hand, this article presents the human, religious-jesuit and theological dimensions of this faithful Companion, lucid Theologian of German Bishops and untiring Apostle in the middle of the unstable Europe of the CVI century.
