Les jésuites et la dévotion à saint Louis au XVIIe siècle: La célébration du Roi très chrétien

Protégés et soutenus par la monarchie française à partir de leur retour en 1603, et néanmoins toujours critiqués, notamment par les plus fervents gallicans, les Jésuites rendent hommage tout au long du xviie siècle au Roi très chrétien à travers le culte de saint Louis, figure miroir du roi Bourbon régnant et nouveau patron du Royaume. Le culte et l’iconographie louent le roi protecteur, tout en rendant publique et commémorant la faveur royale face à des détracteurs virulents. Ils prouvent ainsi leur fidélité au roi régnant et, plus généralement, à la Monarchie française, en même temps qu’ils témoignent de leur dévouement au bien du Royaume, et justifient dès lors leur intégration au sein de la France. L’iconographie de saint Louis dessine alors un portrait très élogieux du Roi très chrétien, à la fois modèle et premier des fidèles, dont la mission est de mener son Royaume sur le chemin du Salut.
While protected and supported by the Crown since their return to France in 1603, and yet still criticized by the most fervent Gallicans, the Jesuits paid tribute, throughout the 17th century, to the Most Christian King by worshiping Saint Louis, the new patron saint of the kingdom, whose figure mirrors that of the ruling Bourbon King. Both the worshiping and the iconography praise the royal patron and they commemorate and make public the favor of the King, against the virulent critics that the Jesuits are confronted to. In so doing, they prove their faithfulness to the ruling King and more generally to the French monarchy, while showing they have the country’s best interest at heart ; from then on, they justify their integration to France. The iconography of Saint Louis then draws a very laudatory picture of the Most Christian King both as an example and the first of the faithful, whose mission is to lead his kingdom onto the path of salvation.
Protegidos y sostenidos por la monarquía francesa a partir de su vuelta en 1603 y sin embargo siempre blanco de las críticas, particularmente de los más fervorosos galicanos, los Jesuitas, a lo largo de todo el siglo xvii, prestan homenaje al Rey Cristianísimo a través del culto al rey San Luis, espejo del rey Borbón reinante y nuevo santo patrón del reino. El culto y la iconografía alaban al rey protector a la par que manifiestan, frente a los virulentos detractores de los Jesuitas, el favor recibido del rey. De este modo dan prueba de su fidelidad al rey y, más generalmente, a la monarquía francesa, al mismo tiempo que demuestran su dedicación a los intereses delreino, justificando así su integración en el seno de Francia. La iconografía dedicada a San Luis refleja por lo tanto un retrato laudatorio del Rey Cristianísimo, a la vez modelo para los fieles y primero entre ellos, cuya misión es llevar al reino por el camino de la salvación.
