Abstract:

The negotiations between the Russian and Chinese empires at Nerchinsk involved a multitude of actors speaking different languages, with different cultural backgrounds and goals. ... All sides had to adjust their expectations to bridge these large cultural divides. Pereira and the Jesuits skillfully exploited their intermediate position between the empires to gain influence with both Russia and China. The Nerchinsk settlement was a turning point in Eurasian history because of their influence. The paper also discusses changing interpretations of the Nerchinsk treaty from the seventeenth century to present.
