El territorio jesuítico-guaraní: Del enfrentamiento de sentidos al conflicto armado (1750–1761)

Hacia mediados del siglo XVIII, el uso y disposición de los territorios platenses se constituían en un problema central de las relaciones coloniales. Bajo esta coyuntura, los pueblos de guaraníes, junto con sus estancias y yerbales, se constituían en un cordón territorial en el centro de la región que frenaba el avance y los intereses económicos de los vecinos del Paraguay y Río de la Plata, de los portugueses e incluso de los charrúas, guenoas y minuanes. Además, los Borbones españoles preparaban reformas geo-políticas que afectarían, en el plano local, el rol desempeñado por las misiones jesuitas en la colonización, resguardo y defensa del territorio de la Corona española y con ello sus derechos y privilegios sobre la tierra. En este trabajo buscamos dar cuenta, por un lado, de la diversidad de sentidos, expectativas y representaciones existentes en torno al territorio misionero en relación a los intereses y fantasías proyectados sobre ellos en un momento histórico donde la problemática territorial y la competencia por los recursos comenzaba a hacerse carne en el espacio rioplatense. Asimismo, nos proponemos mostrar como esas nuevas políticas y representaciones entraron en conflicto con los propios intereses y concepciones guaraníes del espacio reduccional y cómo estas polarizaciones se plasmaron en el conflicto bélico que ha dado en llamarse “guerra guaranítica”.
Until the middle of the 18th century, the use and disposition of the La Plata territories were a central problem in colonial relations. Within this context, the Guarani missions, with their farms and mate plantations, constituted a territory that hindered the advance and pursuit of the economic interests of the neighbors from Paraguay and the La Plata River, of the Portuguese and even the Charrua, Guenoa and Minuano. In addition, the Spanish Bourbons prepared geopolitical reforms that would affect the role played by the Jesuit missions in the colonization and defense of the Spanish crown and thus of its rights and privileges over the land. This paper discusses the diversity of meanings, expectations and representations around the missions’ territory in relation to the interests and fantasies projected on them in a period when the problem of territory and the competition for resources became concrete in the La Plata space. It tries to show those new policies and representations created a conflict with the Guarani interests and views of the reductions’ space and how this polarization led to an armed conflict that has been called “Guarani War.”
