Abstract:

This study presents the poetical work of a forgotten Jesuit whose name is Michael Doria (Arfa [Lleida] 1737–Genoa 1819). So long as his literary works are two poems (an eclogue and an epos) and thirteen dissertations, all written in Latin, I have concentrated on the poetry. I present a critical edition with a rhythmical translation to Catalan and I also analyze both their meaning and their form. In the introduction I place this poetry in its historical, geographical and literary context, where we can emphasize the influence of the University of Cervera with Joseph Finestres and his cultural circle on all the colleges of the Aragonese Jesuitical province, to which Lleida belonged—where probably he wrote these poems as a Grammar and Rhetoric teacher (1764-1767)—and other colleges where he had stayed before his ordination. I offer all the biographical data I have found about this poet, from which we must highlight his long journey that began when Charles III exiled the Society of Jesus in 1767, and also his intervention in its restoration. After the conclusion, I also present the edition and the translation of his discourses, and I offer likewise an appendix with other documents linked to our author. Finally, as a complement, I edit and translate an example of Jesuitical Latin poetry published in Lleida in the beginning of the 18th century—of basically laudatory kind—in order to show how this type of poetry has evolved.
