Abstract:

The synthesis of Christianity and Confucianism, which made Matteo Ricci not only the most successful Catholic missionary in China but a pioneer in the history of cultural encounters, was achieved in two stages. The first occurred in his lifetime, and represented Ricci’s revision of the initial approach of evangelization via Buddhism developed by his senior colleague, Michele Ruggieri. In the second stage, occurring after his death, Ricci’s legacy was challenged by his successor in the Jesuit China Mission, Nicolas Longobardo, who questioned Ricci’s interpretation of Confucianism. In this paper, I shall summarize briefly Ricci’s turn from Buddhism to Confucianism and then analyze in more detail Longobardo's critique.
