Abstract:

The monumental work by the Jesuit Maximilianus Sandæus (1578-1656) is one of the most fruitful on the issue of figurative language and thought in the modern period. At the crossroads of the history of Christian mysticism and the legacy of humanist symbolics, this work, which strives to define an “emblematic theology”, enables us to examin the close link between figurative expression and mystical experience. In echo to this reformulation of language through the figure, this volume offers for the first time the edition of the annotations made by the great German mystic Angelus Silesius (1624-1677) to his copy of Sandæus’s Pro Theologia Mystica Clavis.
