Abstract:

This contribution tends to show three interrelated points: (1) the reputedly ‘low’ level of mathematical instruction in Coimbra was not all that exceptional, even in a larger European context. Moreover, (2) it offers new prosopographical evidence on the engagement of non-Portuguese Jesuit Indipetae in mathematical instruction at the Colégio das Artes in Coimbra, who so far were not recognized as such; (3) it discusses some evidence on the presence of up-to-date mathematical books in the same milieu. All three observations are limited to the 2nd half of the 17th century, especially the period 1656-1692.
