- Abstract:
The purpose of the book is to examine the content of so called Litterae Indipetae Polonae, a collection of Latin letters written in 17th and 18th centuries by Jesuits from Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and addressed the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, asking for the abroad missions to south-east Asia (especially China). The Polish letters from the collection Pol. 79 (Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu) are presented in comparison with a similar correspondence from other Jesuit provinces. By analysing the literary content of the letters, this study captures the spirit of religious fervour of Polish Jesuits (for example Andrzej Rudomina, Jan Mikolaj Smogulecki, Michal Boym) and identifies the source of their inspiration. In order to provide more comprehensive view, the letters are presented in the context of European epistolographic and rhetoric tradition. The role of letters in internal and external communications of the Society of Jesus is also underlined. To facilitate the correlation of the analysed texts with the events that took place in Europe and East Asia at that time, the author presents also historical background of the Jesuit activities in the Far East and the figures of important Jesuit missionaries, i.e. Francis Xavier and Matteo Ricci.
