Abstract:

After their exile imposed by King Charles III, the Jesuits of Paraguay arrived in Italy with reputations of both fame and infamy due to their role in the Guarani War against Spain and Portugal. Their experiences during the expulsions meant that the defence of the Society of Jesus's work in Paraguay remained at the heart of many of these Jesuits' concern. Most important among them was Domingo Muriel, the last Jesuit provincial of Paraguay, who wrote an apologetic history of the Guarani War and helped publish the writings of many other former missionaries. Another figure was Martin Dobrizhoffer, the Austrian former Jesuit missionary who ascribed a prominent role to the Jesuits in his published account of the Guarani War. Another key figure and follower of Muriel was former Jesuit José Peramás, who wrote a philosophical history of Paraguayan missions: for him Jesuit government in Paraguay was an exemplary model for governance to contrast the new ideas of the French Revolution.
