Abstract:

The Archive of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith contains evidence of an investigation by the Congregation of the Index between 1823 and 1824 into the famous book, La Venida del Mesìas en gloria y magestad, written by Manuel de Lacunza and published in 1816 in London under the false Jewish name of Juan Josaphat Ben-Ezra. The Congregation’s deliberations on this work lasted for over two years and ended with the volume’s condemnation and its inclusion (in each language and edition of its publication) in the Index of Forbidden Books. Unknown until now, the Congregation’s debates about this work are very important because of the various opinions expressed and for the matters examined: millenarianism, judeophilia, the myth of the conversion of the Jews and the polemical representation of Rome-􀂊Babylon. The debates shed light, further, on the role of the papacy, the suppression of the Society of Jesus, and its restoration, between "old" and "new" worlds, revealing a kind of “world history” of the spread of the book of Lacunza that to date has been little considered.
