In Mexico, the Society of Jesus was formally restored on 19 May 1816. To celebrate this event, emblems and poems (following the Ratio Studiorum) were presented in the cloisters and doors of the Jesuit college of San Ildefonso; these were subsequently published in the book, Relación del restablecimiento, by Juan Francisco Cañizares. A total of thirty-four emblems were created to represent the virtues of the persecuted and triumphant Society. They evoked the traditional Jesuit strengths in youth education and the study of science, depicting through these emblems the hope that their strengths would be renewed once more in the restored Society of Jesus.
