Life in the Jesuit colleges of the Ancien Régime was marked by the practice of theatre. Less is known about this aspect in the years after the Society’s restoration. This essay provides an analysis of the revival of dramatic representations led by the Society of Jesus of Jesus in France from 1814. It questions the way, the means, and the meaning of this revival in a context of political and cultural change. Jesuit theatre in this period reflected the difficulties and problems encountered by the restored Society, including the stigma left by the suppression. This chapter is also an introduction to the history of the relationship between Jesuits and theatre in the modern era.
