This chapter conducts an investigation from the point of view of a history of secularization into the relationship between political constructions of the Hispanic-American nations in the nineteenth century and the contrasting representations of the Society of Jesus. This relationship is shown to be reflective of the tensions that ran through both the processes of national construction, and the national politics of the period. The history of the Society of Jesus in Hispanic-American nations is enlisted in this chapter as the backdrop for exploring the development of an overall perspective for writing the political history of the region.
