Abstract:

This chapter explores the ways in which the Society of Jesus in Brazil was represented by the Instituto Histórico Geografico Brasileiro (IHGB), the institution founded in 1838 with imperial authority to write the history of the “Brazilian nation”. Through an examination of the journal of the Institute from its foundation to 1940, it will be shown how in the arc of 100 years the Jesuits shifted from being presented in a negative light —from the time of the Society’s 1759 expulsion, it was seen as a “Estado dentro do Estado” (State within the State)— to a positive one, as the institution that helped found Brazil. This change in view can be attributed to a number of factors: Brazil’s political transition from being part of an empire to a republic; the consolidation of a new historiographical paradigm in Brazil; the recovery of the Society’s prestige in areas such as education; and the loss of the central role of the Instituto Histórico Geografico Brasileiro for the writing of national history.
