Abstract:

This chapter explores the process by which the Society of Jesus articulated its pre-Restoration identity. Due to its foundational traits, the Society was perhaps one of the ecclesiastical organizations with greater clarity regarding the boundary between that which was "internal" and "external" to the Society. The Jesuits developed a double language to reflect this differentiation: one was used to address its members — most often related to the Spiritual Exercises — and another one was created specifically for outsiders. This second language would produce the discourse that the Jesuits constructed in regards to their identity. Through a variety of discursive forms, Jesuits presented themselves with a view to being recognised as a united body that sought to encompass their palable regional and 'professional' differences. Within this frame, the 'persecution' of the Society constituted yet another fundamental identificatory point of union. This chapter attempts to recover this construction through Jesuit historiography written by members of the Society.
