Abstract:

The Spiritual Exercises in Jesuit practice is generally considered in its continuity, both as an instrument of the mission and as a mark of the Society’s internal identity. But the Restoration bull fails to mention them. Twenty years later, the letter of General J.-P. Roothaan demanded that the Jesuits return to the booklet of the Exercises, deploring the ignorance that the Jesuits had of it and the excessive use of spiritual literature inspired by the Exercises. This chapter explores these different moments by proposing, as a hypothesis and as a hermeneutic method, to link the study of the Exercises and their practices. One can compare them with the spiritual literature that draws inspiration from them. The aim here is not to determine their filiations but, conversely, to look for what constitutes the framework for interpreting the Exercises, a framework largely fixed by Jesuit conceptions of mission and spiritual direction. The interpretation of the Exercises is linked to the understanding of the Society of Jesus's relationship with society.
