Abstract:

One of the dominant topics of modern Catholic culture was the connection between devotion to the Sacred Heart and the establishment of the social kingdom of Christ. This political-theological connection was especially prominent in early-twentieth-century papal teachings, the origins of which lay in the second half of the nineteenth century in the work of the French Jesuit, Henri Ramière. Drawing inspiration from concepts developed after the restoration of the Society, Ramière made this connection the salient feature of the devotional network, the Apostolate of Prayer, and of its popular periodical, Messager du Coeur de Jésus. These features are examined in this chapter in their political and social contexts and as key examples of the Catholic response to the processes of secularization and the hegemony established in the Church through its ideology of intransigence.
