- Abstract:
As a truly symbolic act this publication returns and unites back together books that were taken from Rīga, from the Rīga Jesuit College, to Sweden by Swedish troops in 1621, and over centuries placed and distributed in Uppsala University Library and other European libraries. The printed catalogue is supplemented by rich illustrative material and a collection of research papers that provide insight into the history and destinies of libraries, Jesuits and their books (all papers are both in Latvian and English). The project to reconstruct the Rīga Jesuit College book collection was started after a meeting between the directors of the National Library of Latvia Andris Vilks and the Uppsala University Library Dr Lars Burman in January 2017. Following that National Library of Latvia colleagues Renāte Berga, Laura Kreigere-Liepiņa and Dr Gustavs Strenga – together with Uppsala University Library colleagues Helena Backman, Dr Maria Berggren and Dr Peter Sjökvist – worked closely together so to produce rich benefits next to the printed catalogue:
