Abstract:

Diego de Ledesma (1519-1575) stands among the most influential Jesuit educators of his time. At a critical time in history, his leadership helped establish the direction and development of Jesuit education. Best known as one of the architects of the Jesuit Ratio Studiorum, or Plan of Studies, Ledesma helped fashion the official document that guided Jesuit administrators in the structure and running of schools. This dissertation completes the picture of Ledesma as an educational leader as it describes his ideas and experiences in the context of his Jesuit life and the sixteenth century educational world in which he lived and worked. The study focuses on Father Ledesma's eighteen-year career at the Society of Jesus' Roman College and the influence he had as an administrator on the college in particular and the Jesuit educational enterprise in general. The research used archival records especially original writings, official and personal correspondence, and official documents related to the Society of Jesus to present a profile of Ledesma's accomplishments and visionary leadership. As the study seeks to place Ledesma in historical context, it also places him within the context of educational administration providing an interpretive framework within which to understand Ledesma's work as an educator in a contemporary context. Robert Starratt and his scholarship in educational administration is a principle point of reference.
