Tomás Pereira, S.J., (1645-1708), the Portuguese missionary from São Martinho do Vale, Braga, Portugal, is better known as court musician and diplomat of Qing Emperor Kanxi. But he was also outstanding in the construction of complex organs and the creator of a large clock with carillon. In fact his organ for the main Jesuit church in Beijing was the largest in the East. He was also an important architect and thus introduces 18th century Western music, organs and architecture to China.
