- Abstract:
The history of medicine is arguably one of the most productive entries into the global history of the early modern world. In that period, physicians and their texts, medical doctrines and practices, healing tools and remedies, travelled throughout the world on the caravans of commerce, in the hulls of ships, and through the entourage of diplomatic and religious missions. Recent studies, for example, have unearthed documentation indicating the transmission of materia medica along the Silk Roads already in the Middle Ages: a two-way traffic in both directions, from East to West and vice versa.
