Abstract:

This paper describes the life and work of Padre Antonio Sepp from South Tirol who worked as a missionary in the Jesuit Province of Paracuaria in South America. He was active as a sculptor, architect and composer in several of the villages from 1691 until his death in 1733. The text focusses on the veneration of Our Lady of Altöttingen, a shrine Image from Bavaria. When travelling to the missions Sepp brought a copy of the sculpture with him and build several chapels for it. In 2010 a modern chapel for a copy of Our Lady of Altötting was built in Sao Jose (today in South Brazil), the mission that Sepp founded in 1697.
