Abstract:

One of the best-known aspects of the life of the anthropologist and Jesuit priest Xavier Albó is his commitment to the indigenous peoples. Based on an analysis of his training (1952-1970) and his professional path (1971-2019), this article considers the intellectual journey of a young Catholic and Jesuit missionary in the context of the Second Vatican Council, inquiring of his missionary praxis in Bolivia: its implantation, its methods of action and its operational networks, the specificity of its theological and political commitment, and the status of the knowledge it produced on indigenous peoples.
