- Abstract:
Francisco Suárez (1548–1617) was a Spanish Jesuit and theologian who resurrected and transformed the Thomistic conception of natural law (see Natural Law; Aquinas, Saint Thomas). Suárez loosened the conceptual connections between rightness and law, a move that represented a significant step in the transition from medieval to modern ways of thinking about morality, which are also exemplified by Hugo Grotius (Irwin 2008, 91; see Grotius, Hugo). Along with Francisco de Vitoria and Domingo de Soto, Suárez laid down the theoretical underpinnings of modern international law and just war theory.
