- Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the literary duel between Carlos de Sigüenza and Eusebio Kino. Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora (1645–1700), was an accomplished astronomer and university mathematics professor. He entered into a public dispute with the Austrian Jesuit Eusebio Kino concerning the nature and significance of the 1680 comet as seen in Mexico. Sigüenza provides a largely scientific analysis of the comet, while Kino defended the religious view, arguing that comets provoke calamities and even predict an imminent final judgment.
