Abstract:

Despite being a religious order exclusive for men, women have played a leading role within the Society of Jesus: not only during the process of foundation, when these women were know as "Mothers in the Society", but also during the development of the works carried out by the Jesuits in the modern period, by means of the ministry of word. For that reason, we are going to develop, throughout this article, not only the attempts to build a feminine branch for the Society of Jesus, but also to stand out the prevention attitudes against women shown by the Jesuits till XVIII century. Finally, we will visit the feminine society by the hand of the Jesuit ministries: from the nuns to the prostitutes, along with the married women.
