Abstract:

It is usual to point at F. Xavier as a great picture of a missionary. The article starts from the conviction that were different explanations of this new Christian figure at that time but that the Jesuits, through Xavier J. De Acosta and D. Bartoli, will impose a precise form of evangelizer. The birth of this "form of life" is inquired into the Decree on Preaching of Trient and the Valladolid debate; in the second place the author make a comparison among the Franciscan millenarist conception and cultural one of the Jesuits; some notes on the personality and the works of Xavier are the third part of the article. The goal is to show that, although the Jesuit missionary's figure found full light only with Valignano, Xavier and the use that the Jesuit jistorians will make of it means already a first anticipation of this reality.
