Abstract:

This article is an interpretation of several of the more important works of the Jesuit Maciej Kazmierz Sarbiewski (Matthias Casimirus Sarbievius, 1595–1640), one of the most renowned Latin lyricists of the XVII century. Among his most interesting creations, are the author's religious odes. This is due, amongst others, to the multi-levelled intelectual play with texts belonging to Christian tradition, as well as that of antiquity. Odes II 11 and II 14 are selected as examples of just such compositions. There are connections, amongst others, to the Bible, medieval hymns, the writings of the Doctors of the Church and medieval theologians, and sixteenth century European lyricists, all hidden under a Horatian layer in Sarbiewski's odes and epodes. The author calls attention to the fact that an extremely important of them, are of the iconographic 'loci communes' type.
